How we rank cards

The short version: we rank cards only by how much they’d pay you back based on your own spending. Nothing else moves a card up or down.

The math

For each card, we take your monthly spending in each category, multiply it by 12, apply the card’s published earn rate, and convert points to dollars at a conservative value. We apply the card’s spending caps, then subtract the annual fee. If you choose to count it, we add the first-year welcome bonus, but only when your spending would meet the bonus requirements.

For “pick your categories” cards, we pick the categories where you spend the most. For two-card combos, we try every way to split your categories between two cards and show the best one if it beats a single card by $50 a year or more.

Some cards earn extra only at certain stores, like Sobeys-family grocers. By default we count the regular rate for those categories, because most people shop at several stores. Turn on “I shop where store-only bonuses apply” to count the higher rate.

Where the data comes from

Earn rates, fees and requirements come from each card issuer’s published terms. Every card shows the date we last checked it, and we re-check each card at least every 60 days. Offers change often, so always confirm the current terms on the issuer’s site before you apply.

Who can get which card

We mark cards that issuers commonly approve for students or newcomers without a Canadian credit history. Approval is always up to the issuer. We also check the age of majority in your province: 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, PEI, Quebec and Saskatchewan, and 19 elsewhere.

How SmartFin makes money

SmartFin is free. Some “Apply” buttons may be referral or affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you’re approved for a card. That commission is never used in the ranking, and cards without a referral link are ranked exactly the same way.

Not financial advice

SmartFin isn’t a registered financial advisor. The card finder gives general estimates, not a recommendation for your personal situation.
